Citizens sound off on the future of Tulsa transportation

Citizens got their final chance to voice their opinions on how Tulsa should grow over the next three decades. The 11th and final PlaniTulsa meeting was held in Tuesday evening. More than 2,000 people attended the meetings, to give their input on Tulsa's comprehensive plan.

The earlier meetings focused on land use. Tuesday's focus was on the future of transportation in Tulsa.

Participants placed game pieces on maps of Tulsa to represent what kind of transportation development they would like to see. It's a chance for them be a part of developing Tulsa's comprehensive plan. The plan is a road map for the city's growth over the next 30 years. Participant Maggie Brown says, "That is why I am here today. To talk about all the important things that do matter to people when they are looking at a city to live in."

Recent studies show that more than 80 percent of Tulsans rely on their personal vehicles for transportation. In the exercise, participants have the opportunity to consider new alternatives. Transportation Planner Andrew Howard tells 2NEWS, "We have the traditional roadway extensions and widenings. And we're adding a few new ones that aren't in Oklahoma yet. Things like light rail, street cars, commuter rail and all the infrastructure improvements for pedestrians that go around a transit station."
